Human-headed trees, fox weddings, a trip to the underworld, and enchanted umbrellas: Episode 5 of The Mythology Podcast explores the idea of yokai in Japanese mythology, history, and culture. Yokai is an umbrella term, describing all kinds of fascinating, bizarre, and sometimes terrifying supernatural creatures, deities, and phenomena found throughout traditional Japanese folklore. The idea of yokai appears in some the earliest Japanese Classical texts and has persisted throughout history, remaining an integral part of Japanese culture even into contemporary times where we find incarnations of yokai in such mediums as manga, anime, films, and video games.
