Episode 27 & 28 (coming soon) of The Mythology Podcast are all about Haitian Vodou. This is certainly not an exhaustive list, but these are some good resources for learning more about Haiti and Vodou (also spelled “Voodoo”, “Vodun,” and other ways, as well.)

Some Books

Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti

Maya Deren

Some people have “issues” with Maya Deren. Personally, I love her. LOVE! This is one of my favorite books of all time, and definitely the book I would recommend about Haitian Vodou. I’ve raved about it in more detail here.

Voodoo: Search for the Spirit

Laennec Hurbon

“Dispelling numerous myths associated with the cultural phenomenon, a history of voodoo emphasizes recent political events in Haiti and the United States and their effects on practitioners in both countries, and offers insights into voodoo’s belief systems and rituals.”

Visions and Voices of Haiti

Phyllis Galembo

“Photographer Phyllis Galembo shows us the human and divine faces and voices of real Haitian Vodou in a beautiful, personal, and intimate document of a fascinating and deeply misunderstood religion.”
